|$0 My Goal: $5.00|
|Congrats! Keep going!|
I am a runner. I crave it. It is my happy place. My father found the same kind of happiness in biking. Almost daily after work he would grab his bike and head out for a ride...25...30...50 miles on a random weeknight. I was always so impressed by that. I remember him talking about the friendships he had developed through biking-other riders who shared the same enjoyment in racing along beautiful farm roads. I grew up outside of Dayton, so he could easily escape to rural routes around Tipp City or Troy.
Not often enough did I share the road with my dad. I do remember one time we planned a father-daughter ride. We rode probably 15 miles to a nice lunch and then made the 15 miles back. 30 miles seemed like a lot to me at that time (high school.) Not long after that ride, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was only 50 years old. A surgery was scheduled. They would remove the cancer, and we would move on with our lives. However, the surgery revealed that the cancer had spread.
My dad recovered from the surgery, and he did not give up...on life. He realized that he may have an expiration date. It was time to expedite the bucket list. He wrote a book. He enjoyed a tour of Europe on his bike. He lived his life, enjoying all the moments because he knew the days were numbered...for five years. We should all live our lives with such intention.
I have only recently discovered the world of biking. It started with triathlons, wishing I could swim and run and skip the bike. But I am beginning to see what Dad found on the road. Like a good outdoor run, you get to slow down and notice the beauty in the world around you (no matter how fast you are going).
While I know biking was his own hobby, I wish I could have joined Dad on more rides. Now I am ready to carry him in my heart for 100 miles! This one (hundred) is for you, Dad!
I’ve joined the Greatest Team Ever, a community of riders, virtual riders, volunteers, researchers, donors, donors and passionate fundraisers who committed to join forces to make amazing things happen. In just ten years the Pelotonia community raised over $184 million for cancer research. But we aren’t stopping there. Every single dollar we raise is invested in innovative cancer research, the brightest minds and ideas, and the tools and technology needed to reach our one goal. Please join me in supporting this cause and let’s save lives. Remember - 100% of every single dollar raised is directed to life-saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Your support matters. Join me. Together, we are unstoppable.
