What is the EveryoneForEmery peloton?
We are family and friends of Emery Twehues, a five year-old girl diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Easter of last year (2018). We are riding to help support Emery and the medical teams at Nationwide Children's Hospital, where Emery is receiving her life-saving treatment. Emery has a favorable prognosis due to cancer research that has moved the 10 year survival for ALL from 11% in the 1960's to currently over 90%. We want every child and person diagnosed with cancer to have this kind of prognosis.
Update on Emery:
Emery is currently in the maintenance phase of her chemotherapy. This phase lasts approximately 20 months and is less intense chemo. She receives chemo pills daily and goes to Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) in Columbus once monthly for IV chemo through her port and intrathecal chemo into her spinal fluid via lumbar puncture (LP). Because she is not as immunosuppressed, her hair has started to regrow and she has resumed most of her normal kid activities- including going back to school. Emery is happy, healthy, and busy! We have spent most of the spring and summer visiting family and friends making up for lost time and visits from last year. Emery goes to school three days of the week and will start kindergarten this fall. She has begun singing lessons and will start dance in the fall. She loves to sing, play with her sister and cousins, and learned how to swim and jump off the diving board already this summer! We are so thankful for all the smiles and happy times 2019 has already brought us. We are forever grateful for the outpouring and love and support we received last year while Emery received and recovered from her tough chemotherapy regimen. We consider every day a gift and as we look at a happy, healthy five-year old girl, we are forever reminded that cancer research has given us her life back. That is why we will continue to ride in Pelotonia every year, to support cancer research so that every person can experience happiness and health after a cancer diagnosis.
Other Friends and Family:
Unfortunately, every year we have friends and family who are newly diagnosed or continue their own battle with cancer. We ride in honor of these friends and family too:
We chose to focus our fundraising efforts on Pelotonia because 100% of every dollar fundraised goes straight to cancer research at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children's Hospital, the teams treating Emery's cancer. We understand that Emery's recovery has been made possible by treatment regimens implemented by her physician teams but discovered through years of research. We want to continue to support scientific breakthroughs as a way of paying forward the decades of cancer research that led to Emery's recovery.
Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research. Focused on a community of passionate fundraisers and centered around a three-day experience of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism, the Pelotonia community has raised more than $158 million for high-risk, high-reward cancer research. Last year, 8,022 Riders from 39 states and 7 countries participated along with 3,576 Virtual Riders and 3,044 Volunteers. Please join me in supporting this cause, where 100% of your donation will go directly towards cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and Nationwide Children's Hospital.
